Day 7: Acadia National Park

We woke up to rain this morning so took the opportunity to be lazy and to also fix some awesome pancakes.  It was George's idea and he made the awesome pancakes while I cooked the bacon.  No, we unfortunately did not have any Maine blueberries to go in them but you can bet we will stop and get some for the next batch.

The weather forecast indicated the rain would stop by noon and it did!

Headed out to Acadia National Park.  Been waiting for this day for a long time.  We stopped at  the Visitor's Center first to get our National Parks book stamped and pick up a map.  Surprisingly enough, a lot of people are out and about today.  This park was established in 1916 and the first to be established east of the Mississippi.  The land was donated entirely by private citizens.  There are still a lot of private residences throughout the park and on Mount Desert Island

Acadia encompasses 49,000 acres and the summit at Cadillac Mountain is 1,530 feet.  We drove the 20 mile Loop Road around the park.

Overlook
We stopped at an overlook and took a short hike down to the ocean where we saw several very large mansions hanging on cliffs.

You really can't see much from the picture above but there is a very, very large home on top of this cliff.

Sand Beach

Next stop was Sand Beach where George figured the water was a cool 50 degrees.

Otter Point

One of the most picturesque points of the park is Otter Point.  Large rocks and boulders were scattered along this area awaiting the next wave to crash into it.  The sun was very warm on this  most eastern part of the park.

We had hoped to get a glimpse of the Bear Island Lighthouse, however, there was too much vegetation along the cove to be able to see it so we moved on to the Jordan Pond House.  This is the only restaurant in the park so we stopped for a Blueberry Crisp a la mode....the best!

Seagull overlooking Bar Harbor
We drove up Cadillac Mountain and the views were amazing, however, it was soooo cold and windy that I could not tolerate it so I didn't get any pictures.

The last overlook produced the only wildlife we've seen so far....a seagull!

In the background is a cruise ship in Bar Harbor.

Acadia is a wonderful East Coast treasure and I'm so glad I was able to experience it!
