Day 4: Maine at last !

Rainy Day
Anna batting at the windshield wiper

It’s a cloudy, rainy and cool morning.  It rained during the night and we discovered a water leak above the windshield.  Ahhh, something else to tend to “tomorrow”!  Anyway, we got on the road about 7:45 AM and promptly ran into Hartford rush hour traffic.  Once north of the city, however, the weather improved.

Continued  listening to Hunter’s Moon” as we rumbled down the road.  Man, the roads “up north” are rough!

Once we got into Maine, we travelled up Route 1 along the coastline where we passed through one adorable town after another.   I wanted to stop in each and every one but no place to park the motorhome.

Passed several yarn shops.....will have to come back tomorrow.

The picture to the left is the town of Kennebunk.  The most beautiful thing about this town is the curb-outcropping of flowers planted in each and every block of the immediate downtown area.   Sooo nice....

Bayley's Campground
We checked into Bayley’s Campground and Resort in Scarborough around 2:00.  This is a very nice campground and they reserved us a spot right on Ashley Pond.  Adorable!  Don’t want to leave!  George has been talking for weeks about how he can’t wait to get to Maine and have a lobster roll (aka “lobstah roll”) so, once we got settled into new home “on golden pond”, we drove up to Freeport and had chowdah and lobstah roll at the Freeport Chowder House.

Freeport Chowder House
This was my first ever lobster roll.  It was good…basically fresh lobster on a grilled buttery bun with a package of mayo on the side (which I did not use).  I’ve decided to taste-test a lobster roll every day I’m in Maine then rate them on a scale from 1 to 10 so stand by for the results.

After dinner, we walked around town.  This is clearly the home of L. L. Bean.  The store(s) take up about two blocks and, yes, we went in each one of them plus some of the other outlet stores.
Afterward, we drove around Portland and George showed me where he once worked and lived, plus the Old Port District with its cobblestone streets.  This area has been re-vitalized with quaint shops, galleries and restaurants and has become a popular nighttime spot.

Next stop was Fort Williams Park and Portland Head Light.  I’m sure you recognize this picture (above)….it’s the most picturesque and most photographed light house on the East Coast.  We arrived here just before sunset and it a was truly awesome experience.
